In partnership with Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, Obscura Digital created the largest immersive hemispherical projection installation to date, which received a Guinness World Record in 2023. Obscura was contracted for content strategy, spatial + projection design, systems design and consultation on the implementation process, and the installation is live today.
One of my primary responsibilities was to build a parametric modelling system for the projection design in order to solve the unique challenges that this environment presents. The design system calculates pixel pitch, lux values on the surface, and appropriate lensing based on projector position and orientation. In this case, an evolutionary solver was employed to optimize the angles of the projector housing pods, since each of the 42 pods contained two separately-oriented channels of video, which allowed for the best image uniformity that was geometrically possible.
This system was built on a TOOL SET that I still improve and employ today to conduct large scale projection design studies.
